Stress Management – The Most Important Life Skill
Most of us don’t believe we’re stressed or that we need to learn stress management! FACT! So are we just conning ourselves? An interesting statistic is that the WHO (World Health Organisation), who are not given to making wild or unsubstantiated claims, have gone on record as saying that a whopping 95% of human illnesses are directly attributable to stress. So what is this thing called stress that we all seem to be utterly oblivious of?
Stress Management – What Is Stress?
Perhaps the best description I ever heard of stress was when I was attending a course given by another therapist. He asked a group of other therapists that he was lecturing to if they could imagine or think about the place where they felt the most chilled out or relaxed. As I sat there thinking about it, an image on my favourite beach (Barleycove Beach) came to mind. I could just imagine being there, the sun warm against my skin, the gentle breeze ruffling through my hair without a care in the world. And then that therapist said – “You know every other experience in your life that’s not as good as that? That’s stress!”.
And in that lightbulb moment, I finally got it! In this mad, rushed 21st century of ours, we take it as the norm to feel under pressure. We think it’s normal to have the stress of getting the kids to the babysitter, to tensely look at our watch as we’re driving to work, wondering if we’ll make it on time, to work in a job we don’t really like, to expect perfection of ourselves, etc, etc. And that’s become the norm!
Stress Doesn’t Have To Be Your Norm
So because everybody else does it, or buys into it, we feel we have to also! That of course immediately prompts the question – if your best friend jumped over the edge of a cliff, would you follow? Perhaps it’s time, right now to re-evaluate our lives and to finally learn stress management!
Stress Management – How To Learn It?
There are many tips out there to help you learn stress management. A simple Google search will provide you with hundreds of sites with advice and tips. Some of them include
- Breathing Deeply – when you are stressed, even without knowing it, you can quite easily slip into a habit of breathing shallowly which only increases stress
- Be Present In The Moment – take a couple of minutes out, when it’s safe to do so, and close your eyes. Now, only allow yourself to be aware of sensations and awarenesses that are happening right now
- Deliberately Relax Muscles – you can do this by closing your eyes and imagining the muscle loosening and relaxing.
For many people though – they can find it difficult to put all of this into practice. That’s where self hypnosis mp3 recordings shine! You get all of these techniques neatly combined in a 30 minute mp3 recording. All you have to do is commit to listen to it for a minimum of 28 days. You’ll be amazed as to how easily that stress begins to melt away. Two excellent self hypnosis recordings can be found right here on this website – Deep Relaxation The Beach (click here) and Deep Relaxation The Forest (click here)
